Tobolsk Comlplex Science Station
The Tobolsk Science Station of the Ural Branch (UB) of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) was founded in June 1994 as a structural unit of the Institute of Ecology and Evolution named after A.N. Severtsov, RAS (Moscow), and received its current status in 2011.
The research undertaken by the Station’s staff encompasses a range of contemporary issues, including:
- the impact of environmental factors on the biological systems of the Ob-Irtysh basin;
- the scientific fundumentals of rational use and reproduction of biological resources of the Ob-Irtysh basin;
- study of the historical and cultural heritage of Siberia.
The researh efforts are supported by long-term ties both with higher education and industry. The Station has established extensive collaboration links with the companies of the Tobolsk industrial sector belonging to the SIBUR Holding.
The boundaries of the Station’s research scope are widened by addressing the issues of the biological diversity of fauna and flora as well as by research into the Arctic and Subarctic regions.
At present the research activity takes place within four scientific laboratories and one humanities research centre:
- the Laboratory of Plant and Animal Ecology in the Zone of Risky Agriculture;
- the Laboratory of Aquatic Ecosystems;
- the Laboratory of Ecotoxicology;
- the Laboratory of Radioecology;
- the Centre for History of Siberia.
The Station also houses the Museum of Local History and Study of Siberia named after A.A. Dunin-Gorkavich, the Research Library, and the Research Subdivision "Mission".
