The history of the Perm Science Centre traces its roots back to 1971, when the first academic subdivisions of the USSR Academy of Sciences, namely the Department of Physics of Polymers and the Department of Ecology and Selection of Microorganisms, were founded. In 1980 the Department of Physics of Polymers underwent transformation and became the Institute of Continuous Media Mechanics of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
Officially, the Perm Science Centre was established in 1988 and since then has comprised seven academic bodies of the Ural Branch of RAS, each with a powerful legacy of research success and collaborative approach to their areas of expertise:
The Department of History, Archaeology and Ethnography;
At present the Centre is headed by Academician Valery P. Matveenko. The Presidium comprises one academician and two RAS corresponding members. The staff of scientific organizations consists of 633 employees, including 67 doctors of sciences and 193 candidates of sciences.
